Six cheap deals to grow your own herb garden
CREATE your own windowsill herb garden and you’ll always have fresh ingredients on hand – for a fraction of the cost of buying them.
I’ve unearthed the best deals and tips for growing a bountiful crop on a budget. So start planting with these handy tips. . .
WISE TIP: You don’t need a lot of space, just a sunny, sheltered spot, indoors or out. Choose three or four varieties that are versatile and common recipe components. This way you reduce the need to buy packs from supermarkets, usually around £1 a pop.
EX-SEEDINGLY TASTY: For packets of seeds, such as basil, parsley and mint, under £1, go to SimplySeed.co.uk. Wilko sells a grow kit for £1, complete with seeds and pots to grow basil, chives and parsley.
If you don’t like your chances of growing from seed, Asda sells a range of live weed without pots from 65p.
GO COMPOST: Compost helps plants grow from seed and improves soil quality. Buy without peat to help the planet. Wilko’s All-Purpose Compost costs £3.50 for 25 litres.
Or you can make your own using common household waste, such as grass clippings, coffee grounds, and fruit and vegetable peelings. The Royal Horticultural Society has an online guide.
GROW YOUR ENTHUSIASM: You can start your seedlings in old washed yogurt pots or other bins destined for the recycling pile
When the plants start to take off, livreshop.com offers a wooden herb garden crate for £1.50, which is the perfect size for perching on windowsills.
Flying Tiger also has a fabulous selection of stylish pots, including metal stands for £1. Buy one for each herb and place them in a tray – B&Q sells a rectangular terracotta saucer for £2.67. Or search your house for containers that you can reuse. Just make sure there are drainage holes at the bottom.
