Here’s How To Make Vegan Skin Care From Your Herb Garden

You don’t have to spend $$$ on expensive skin care products for glowing skin. You can create your own vegan skin care products from the comfort of your own home.

In this episode of LIVEKINDLY With Me, herbalist and founder of Willow’s Touch, a herbal remedy brand, Vivian Mac takes a tour of her herb garden. She also makes three easy do-it-yourself skin care garden recipes: lemon balm sugar scrub, calendula face serum, and rosemary hair rinse.

Mac opts for lemon balm for its antiviral properties. It also helps support the nervous system and is known to be a mood booster. “Lemon balm, I love it because it’s so soothing,” she explains. “Lemon balm oil can also be used for any itchy or topical acne, cuts, scrapes, sores.”

Calendula is another good option for herbal skin care because it has anti-inflammatory properties and helps relieve irritation. “They are known for their bright yellow colors, although the colors can range from cream to bright orange,” says Mac. “The medicinal part is the whole flower. You can actually eat the petals and add them to your salads or use them as a garnish for desserts.

Finally, Mac uses rosemary, which also has anti-inflammatory properties. The aromatic herb helps relieve colds and is a flavor enhancer. “Just smelling it helps open your nasal passages,” she explains. In addition to helping with digestion, Mac says rosemary can help relieve fevers.

Here’s how to do vegan skin care

Lemon balm sugar scrub

Ingredients

Part 1: Lemon balm infused oil

  • 1 part of dried lemon balm
  • 4 parts grape seed oil (You can replace other oils like olive, sunflower, etc.)

Part 2: Make the scrub

  • 1/2 cup of sugar
  • 1/8 cup (30 mL) lemon balm infused oil
  • 1 tablespoon of lemon balm leaves

Preperation

  1. 1

    Part 1: Fill a clean, dry glass jar with the dried lemon balm leaves from the distance.

  2. 2

    Garnish the rest of the pot with oil.

    Label the jar with the ingredients, the date, and anything else you would like to write down, such as your intentions to make this oil.

  5. 5

    Shake the pot regularly, ideally a few times a week. Store it in a warm, sunny place to let the oil steep for 6 weeks.

    After 6 weeks, the vegetable oil will be ready for use. Drain the lemon balm leaves. You can also use cheesecloth to strain out the finer pieces, squeezing the cheesecloth to extract the remaining oil.

    Oil can last a long time (ranging from 6 months to 3 years) if it is made and stored correctly. Keep it away from moisture, airtight and store it in a cool, dark place. Pouring it into an amber bottle also helps. Check if the oil has gone rancid by smelling it and seeing if it smells bad or sour.

    Part 2: Add the sugar and lemon balm infused oil to a clean, dry bowl and mix.

    Crush the lemon balm leaves with a mortar and pestle (or use a spoon, coffee / herb grinder, or your clean hands) until finely crushed.

    Add the lemon balm leaves to the scrub and mix to incorporate.

    Transfer the scrub to a clean, dry jar. To maximize shelf life and avoid contamination, remove scrub with a clean spoon each time you use it. You can keep it for about six months or more.

    You can use this refreshing and exfoliating scrub on your skin by gently massaging it over your body in a circular motion. Rinse off the scrub when you’re done.

Recipe Notes

Lemon balm infused oil should be prepared at least six weeks in advance, using the sun infusion method. Summer is a great time to do this, as the sun is out and the weather is warmer, which is ideal for making herbal oil. You can tailor it to the amount you want, depending on how much lemon balm and oil you have on hand. This oil is made in preparation for making the lemon balm sugar scrub, but you can also use this oil in other ways, like: applying it as is on your skin, making an ointment, or in your kitchen!

Calendula Face Serum

Ingredients

  • 1 part of calendula flowers
  • 4 parts jojoba oil (You can replace other oils such as olive, sunflower, etc.)

Preperation

    Fill a clean, dry glass jar with the dried calendula flowers from the distance.

    Garnish the rest of the jar with jojoba oil.

    Label the jar with the ingredients, the date, and anything else you would like to write down, such as your intentions to make this oil.

    Shake the pot regularly, ideally a few times a week. Store it in a warm, sunny place to let the oil steep for 6 weeks.

    After 6 weeks, strain the calendula into a measuring cup. You can also use cheesecloth to strain out the finer pieces.

    Pour the filtered oil into a dropper bottle for easy application. Store the remaining oil in a clean, dry jar. Oil can last a long time (ranging from 6 months to 3 years) if it is made and stored correctly. Keep it away from moisture, airtight and store it in a cool, dark place. Pouring it into an amber bottle also helps. Check if the oil has gone rancid by smelling it and seeing if it smells bad or sour.

    To use the Calendula Face Serum, add about 5-10 drops in your palm and massage gently into clean skin.

Rosemary hair rinse

Ingredients

  • 1 bunch of rosemary (about 10 sprigs)
  • 6 cups of boiling water
  • Sponge or small cup

Preperation

    Place the rosemary in a large heatproof bowl. .

    Add boiling water to the bowl.

  3. 3

    Let the rosemary steep until it cools enough to be safely applied to your scalp and hair. (If you are in a hurry, soak the rosemary in 2 cups of boiling water for more than 20 minutes to make a stronger brew, then add lukewarm or cold water to the bowl. This would reduce the time it takes to wait for the rinse the hair to cool it.)

    Tilt your head over the bowl. Position your hair so that it is also on top of the bowl, so that any excess water drains into the bowl. Use a sponge or a small cup to pour the hair rinse over your head. Repeat several times until you have wet your entire scalp and hair.

    Massage your scalp with your fingers.

    Once you are done, pat your hair with a towel and dry it. It is recommended that you let the hair rinse and let it dry rather than rinsing or washing your hair afterwards, but that is up to you. You can also wash your hair first and then finish with a hair rinse.
