Edinburgh Secret Herb Garden inspired by the magic of the couple’s first date for sale

The breathtaking Secret Herb Garden and The Secret Garden Distillery has been put up for sale by the family that created it.

No prices are given for the land and the various businesses, but it is understood that the market will decide as offers are received.

Nevertheless, this is a unique opportunity for some environmentally conscious entrepreneurs looking to start a business with a solid base and location.

During their first date, Hamish and Liberty Martin both shared a love for all things herbs, food, and drink. During this date, the couple discovered a shared appreciation for the natural world – it was then that the seeds of their little empire began to sprout.

Hamish, a wine merchant, started a degree in herbology at the Royal Botanic Gardens in Edinburgh, and a year later the couple were granted 7.5 acres of derelict land which now houses the shop, cafe and distillery Secret Herb Garden.

Ten years later, the family – which now also includes five children, four dogs, chickens, a cat and an owl – is moving on and looking for the right buyer.

Speaking of the sale, Hamish said: “The future of the earth and the beauty it beholds is at the forefront of everything we do. The green space we have created allows people to roam freely and enjoy the subtle magic that nature has to offer, while our range of gins showcase the wonderful natural flavors created from our huge garden of botanical herbs.

“The business is thriving with an established international customer base, including a number of premier locations, premier outlets and premier supermarkets. It’s at a very exciting stage for the right investor, who has the time, resources and vision to take it to the next level.

“I am extremely proud of what we have achieved and would love to pass on everything this special place has taught me to the new custodian – about herbs, gin making and this growing and very exciting industry. We have absolutely loved our time here but can’t wait for the next chapter we have created a haven here on the outskirts of the capital but plan to spend more family time in a place we found a bit further north: it has fascinating forest and tremendous potential for truly exciting conservation and biodiversity projects.”
