Eagle Scout revamps Lake Katherine herb garden

PALOS HEIGHTS, IL – Thanks to the talents of a hard-working Eagle Scout candidate, the herb garden at Katherine Lake Nature Center and Botanical Gardens at Palos Height has been given a new lease of life. In recent years, the wooden foundations of the not-for-profit park’s popular herb garden have disintegrated. Liam Reynolds joined the staff at Lake Katherine and Palos Heights Public Works in ripping up the ailing garden, then stepped up to give the space a stunning overhaul.

Reynolds, 16, junior to Jones College Prep High School spent many weeks rebuilding the herb garden for his Eagle Scout project. He created wooden planting boxes which have now been replenished with abundant herbs and plants, giving the garden back its former glory.

“I am really delighted with the result of the herb garden,” said Reynolds, a member of the 1441 Scout Troop from the Diocese of St Mary. “Helping to rebuild the garden and make it available to everyone has been really good. It was difficult and more difficult than expected, but it turned out well in the end.”

Reynolds got the idea to help Lake Katherine during a family visit to the park. “My family goes to Katherine Lake a lot to enjoy nature,” he said. “My dad once pointed out that the herb garden needed a facelift and suggested rebuilding it would make a great Eagle Scout project.”

Liam jumped into action by completing the project in time for Lake Katherine volunteers to replant the herbs and plants that made the garden such a popular attraction this summer.

“Liam volunteered at the right time,” said Gareth Blakesley, operations manager for Lake Katherine. “Our herb garden was in poor condition and we were looking for options to replace it. When Liam came in and offered to rebuild the garden as part of his Eagle Scout project, we were delighted to have him on board. Since it was completed we have been able to replant a multitude of herbs and plants and it really looks wonderful. We are truly grateful for Liam’s hard work and talent. “

Liam plans to finish his Eagle Scout this month and is considering an engineering degree in college.
