DIY Wood Pallet Herb Garden

Skip the farmer’s market and spend your Sunday sleeping in with this charming and compact herb garden palette! It can be laid flat or leaned against a wall if your home is cramped. Plus, it adds a rustic cabin warmth to your decor.

This project has the potential to get a little messy, so we recommend doing it outside.

DIY Wood Pallet Herb Garden

Turn a shipping pallet into a chic herb garden, perfect for your patio or balcony.

Here is what you will need:

  • wooden shipping pallet
  • Wooden planks: 2 equal to the length of your pallet; 1 equals the width.
  • Plywood, cut to the same length and width as the pallet
  • Drill
  • 10cm wood screw
  • sanding block
  • Tarpaulin
  • Stain + brush
  • Gloves
  • Cloth
  • Scissors
  • Weed control fabric
  • Stapler
  • Potted herbs of your choice – such as basil, thyme, rosemary…
  • Topsoil

Drill through the wooden boards on the sides of the pallet to create a durable frame.

Using your sand block, carefully sand the top of the pallet.

This could get messy, so it’s time to put down your tarp! Place the pallet on it. Put on gloves and add a coat of dark wood stain. Using a cloth, carefully rub away any excess stain.

Once the stain is dry, turn the palette over. Take your weeding cloth and roll it over the back of the pallet so that it is completely covered.

Use your scissors to cut the weed fabric to the same size as your paddle. Use your staple gun to secure the fabric in place.

Place the plywood over the weed fabric. Screw it securely in place with the drill: make sure you also screw the sides, not just the corners. Once done, flip the pallet right side up.

Pour some topsoil into the pallet and start planting between the slats! Be sure to add more topsoil as needed to ensure the herbs are firmly rooted in the soil.

Keep track of which herbs are which by using a brush and white paint to label them with cute cursive writing!

This pallet garden will make you want to cook so much. It’s practical, ecological and pretty too!
