2nd Annual Plant Sale @ Groundwork Market Garden

Groundwork Market Garden is one of the most exciting urban agriculture initiatives underway in Buffalo. I wrote about the Urban Farm in 2020, when they first showed off their 60,000 square foot education building. Not only is Groundwork Market Garden a wonderful place to visit, but it’s also a great place to attend a community event.

On Saturday, May 14 (10 a.m. to 2 p.m.), Groundwork Market Garden is hosting its second annual Plant Sale – a free community event with free seedlings (with limits) and an on-farm seedling sale.

Groundwork Market Garden offers a wide variety of certified organic vegetable plants, herbs and flowers for sale.

“Especially in the past few years, we have seen the cost of food rise and the fragility of our food systems,” said Mayda Pozantides, co-founder and farmer at Groundwork Market Garden. “Building local food security means supporting local farms and encouraging people to grow their own food at home. You can buy a liter of tomatoes or a tomato plant for about the same price, but you will be given food all summer. There’s a joy and a sense of independence in that, and that’s what we want to share.

Pozantides also wants people to know that you can buy your vegetable and herb plants with SNAP benefits. The event will host a number of partners including Put a Plant on It which will sell indoor plants, Field and Fork Network which will enroll people in Double Up Food Bucks, a NYS program that matches SNAP benefits dollar-for-dollar on purchases of fresh fruit and vegetables, in participating establishments. Cornell Cooperative Extension Master Gardeners will offer free soil pH testing, and attendees are encouraged to bring a soil sample. There will be a number of other community organizations with activities for children, information and resources, live art, food, music and more! The complete list of partners is available on the event Facebook page and leaflet.

Attendees can pre-order their plants for pickup at the event. A full list of what is available can be found at Groundwork Market Garden’s Online Store.

“We will have our certified organic vegetable, herb and flower seedlings for sale, along with a number of activities and offers from our amazing partners. There will be food, music, live art, information for producers, resources and more. Thanks to the generous support of our board member Mitch Nowakowski, we are also able to offer free organic tomato and pepper plants to our attendees. – Terracing market garden
