Youth Poetry Contest

ELIGIBILTY: Kindergarten through Ninth Grade There are two contests – Regular Classroom Students and Exceptional Students Each group and grade will be judged as a separate contest


1.      All entries must be typed and titled.

2.      Please submit only ONE poem per student.

3.      On back of entry include student name, address, age and school grade.

  School attending and name of sponsoring garden club.  

4.      All entries become the property of the garden club.

5.      Poems do not have to rhyme.

6.      Poems may be traditional verse, acrostics, blank verse, cinquains,

  diamond poems of Haiku.


Local First, Second and Third place winners receive a Certificate of Award, gift certificates for purchase at Barnes and Noble Bookstore, and media recognition.  All students entering
the contest will receive a certificate.

State Winners will receive certificates.

Regional and National winning entries receive certificates and poems are compiled into a booklet that will be made available to winners.

Deadline for submission will be October 20, 2017.

Pecan Grove Garden Club

Smokey Bear or Woodsy Owl Poster Contest
Competition Open to 1st through 5th Grade Students

Poster must feature Smokey Bear or Woodsy Owl – but not both together.

Smokey Bear posters must be based upon and include, Smokey’s fire prevention message “Only YOU 
Can Prevent Wildfires”. Woodsy Owl posters must be based upon and include, Woodsy’s conservation message “Lend a Hand – Care for the Land!”

Posters should encourage children to take personal role in preventing wildfires or conserving natural resources.
Materials that can be used: crayons, markers, poster paints, watercolors, etc.
No three-dimensional poster, computer-scanned, or electronically generated images will be accepted!
The artist’s name, grade level, school, teacher’s name, school address, school phone number, city, and state must be PRINTED on the back of the poster in the lower right corner. Each poster must include the sponsoring local garden club name which is: Pecan Grove Garden Club. Please do NOT use dark markers.
