Children's Tree Walk
Pecan Grove Garden Club collaborating with the City of Yuma Parks Department created a Children’s
Tree Walk in Yuma’s West Wetlands Park. The Stewart Vincent Wolf Memorial Playground (a large and unusual playground
designed by children and built by volunteers) was installed in the park during February of 2007. Our $20,000 project
began in late spring 2007 and was completed in the spring of 2008. The garden club applied for and received a $10,000
grant from the Arizona State Land Department - Urban & Community Forestry. Grants are made possible by the USDA Forest
Service. The City provided the required $10,000 matching funding with In-kind labor, trees and equipment.
The Children’s Tree Walk trees,
path, and signage are located around the perimeter of the playground. This location presents a wonderful opportunity
to educate children about nature as they visit the playground. It features various trees and sturdy 24” x 36”
brightly colored educational signage with pictures and narrative written to appeal to children. Signs provide information
about tree care, tree rings, value of trees and historical information.
